Why Emily would make a good co-founder

I have experienced the refugee camp side of life therefore my experience with hardship and refugee children is really built up.I am a quick learner, flexible to new ideas, teamplayer and a disciplined person. Therefore collaboration will be easier and long-lasting

Elevator pitch for startup:

The idea is to establish a vibrant leisure center with a library/learning resource centre within the Kakuma refugee camp, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children to play, learn, and socialize.

Children in refugee camps often lack access to safe spaces for recreation and learning, impacting their physical and emotional well-being. This project aims to address this gap by providing a dedicated facility tailored to the unique needs and interests of refugee children in Kakuma.

The leisure center will encompass indoor and outdoor play areas, equipped with age-appropriate toys, games, and educational materials. It will also feature designated spaces for creative expression, such as art and music activities. Additionally, the center will offer structured programs focused on health, hygiene, and psychosocial support. In addition to the leisure center, we aim to develop a library that provides access to a diverse range of books, educational resources, and multimedia materials. This library will serve as a hub for learning and exploration, empowering children to expand their knowledge, foster a love for reading, and cultivate critical thinking skills.

By leveraging existing resources and expertise within the camp, we will ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the leisure center in meeting the diverse needs of refugee children.Engaging refugee families in the design and planning process, we will ensure that the leisure center reflects the cultural diversity and preferences of the community it serves.

In addition to enhancing psychosocial well-being and fostering community bonds, the establishment of the leisure center and library within the Kakuma refugee camp will also significantly benefit education outcomes for the children. By providing a dedicated space for learning within the leisure center, we will offer structured educational programs that complement formal schooling.

These programs will include:

Informal Learning Opportunities: The library will serve as a supplementary educational space where children will engage in informal learning activities, such as reading clubs, storytelling sessions, and educational games. This approach will not only reinforce academic concepts learned in school but also stimulates curiosity and a love for learning.

Skill Development: Through interactive and hands-on activities, children will develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and communication.

Access to Resources: The center will provide access to educational resources that may be limited within the camp, such as books, educational toys, computers, and multimedia materials. This will be through a kids library that will be established within the center.

Other expected outcomes:

Enhanced psychosocial well-being and resilience among refugee children, fostering a sense of hope and optimism for the future.

Increased access to quality education and recreational opportunities, empowering children to reach their full potential despite their circumstances.

Strengthened social cohesion and community bonds through shared experiences and collaborative activities within the leisure center.

Improved health and hygiene practices among children and their families, leading to better overall health outcomes and reduced vulnerability to disease.
